Software Suggestions
Here are some software suggestions we have for our community:
Firefox Web Browser: This web browser is taking the internet by the storm. It’s available for Linux, Macintosh, and Linux machines. It has a pluggable architecture and here are some of our favorite extensions:
- Bookmark Here: This is a simple extension that allows you to place bookmarks simply by clicking on a link in any bookmarks menu. It saves you the hassle of opening up the bookmarks management page to place a bookmark where you want it.
- Download Statusbar: Are you tired of the default popup download manager in Firefox, it just always seems to get in the way doesn’t it? Here is a good solution. This extension places a little status bar for each download at the bottom of your browser, provides more information than the default dowload manager, and cleans itself up by default. What more could you ask for?
- Flashblock: The Flashblock extension stops all of those annoying flash popup adds from bothering you. After installing the extension, you can click on flash content you actually want to view.
- Forcastfox: Everyone needs an easy way to get their local weather forcast, especially if you commute by bike. This extension puts the current and forcasted weather on the bottom of your browser window. It is particular nice in that it alerts you to severe weather alerts automatically.
- Foxmarks Bookmark Syncronizer: If you are anything like me, you have multiple computers you work on and keeping your bookmarks in sync
iswas a real pain. With this bookmark syncronization plugin, you can easily keep many computers in sync, automatically. You do end up uploading your bookmarks to some unknown machine, I don’t know about you, I don’t keep any personal information in my bookmarks, so they can mine away to their hearts content. - Wizz RSS News Reader: This extension allows you to view RSS (Real Simple Syndication) feeds from the browser
Itunes: The ease of integration between Itunes and the Ipod is unmatched by other audio players. After trying a couple other mp3 players, I finally broke down and got an Ipod. The main draw for me was the plethora of podcasts, I could finally keep up with news while riding my bike to and from work. I also enjoy listening to audio books, here is a great article about How to configure Itunes when ripping audio books.
Skype: Skype is a newcomer in the instant messenging arena that is taking the world by storm. They have a much grander vision than most of the “traditional” IM clients and have focused on making it a general communication tool. They offer clients for windows, mac, and even linux. However, their windows client is typically more feature rich than the other clients, currently it is the only client able to do video conferencing.
W.Bloggar: A nice WYSIWYG blogging client for windows. Check our FAQ section for information on how to configure it to work with Dtrick.org
