Cycling

I've started to collect a large number of cycling related bookmarks. Rather than try to keep my various browsers in sync on every machine I use, I decided to just post them on the site. Who knows, they may be of use to someone else as well!

Massachusetts Bike Shops

  • Harris Cyclery:  Perhaps best know for the wisdom and writings of Sheldon Brown, I've had good luck dealing with them via mail order for commuter parts.  One of these days, I'll actually stop by the shop when we are heading out for a trip.

Rhode Island Bike Shops
  • circleAcycles: I don't have any personal experience with Chris, but friends have said he is great to work with.  I've seen some of his work and it looks nice.
  • Providence Cycle: A good shop, staffed by friendly people. They tend to focus more on high end road and mountain bikes, offering a few liesure bikes as well. The store has a good selection of bike accessories.
  • The Hub: Another good bike shop. These guys are much more focused on using bikes for commuting, work, and as your primary vehicle. They have a connection with the local bike messenger crowd. It's just a different type of shop.

Rhode Island Clubs
  • Bike To Brown: A Brown group promoting bicycle commuting.
  • Brown Cycling Club: A mixture of undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, staff, and friends of Brown. Most of the rides are pretty fast paced.
  • Narragansett Bay Wheelman: Probably the largest cycling club in RI. They offer arrowed rides every Sunday morning, with a wide array of abiliities.

Safety

  • http://www.bikexprt.com/streetsmarts/usa/index.htm: This is an excellent online book about bicycle safety.  It's a condensed version of the 46 page mini-book that they sell on their site.  The online version covers best practices for riding with traffic, proper lane placement, dealing with intersections, emergency avoidence techniques, braking, riding in groups, dealing with rain and darkness, and methods for dealing with some of the tougher situations you may face.
  • http://secure.cartsvr.net/catalogs/catalog.asp?prodid=2178323: A small US company that makes highly reflective gloves, mainly for police and other public service personnel.  The gloves are one size fits all, but are stretchy enough to fit over a standard biking glove.

Wheel Builders
  • Peter White runs a small shop in NH.  He is well know for his wheel building skills.
  • Joe Young is commonly referred to as "the man" when it comes to custom wheels
